那么此时，便有两个难题摆在上帝面前。
第一个，是在当下消极、颓废社会风气中，如何用一部文艺作品来振奋它，弘扬正气，甚至是驱散战争阴霾。
第二个，是如何在这样一个作家群里找寻一位与众不同的人完成这件事，此人必须有逆流而上的勇气和能力，必须是个硬汉。
上帝说，我尝试解决这两个难题。
于是《老人与海》和海明威应运而生。
前者回答上帝，“一个人并不是生来要给打败的，你尽可以把他消灭掉，可就是打不败他。”
并以此激励了一代美国人。
后者回答上帝，“我总是按照冰山原则来写作，那就是浮出水面的只有八分之一，还有八分之七藏在水下。你知道的东西可以含而不露，这样反而加固你的冰山。”
并以此刷新了整个文坛。
