主人公在岛上一直处于一个矛盾之中：信仰上帝到底有没有用处。很多时候主人公觉得自己的遭遇是上帝在惩罚自己，同时很多时候主人公也在怀疑上帝是否存在。作者在书中没有通过主人公发问，而且借星期五之口。主人公向星期五灌输基督教的信仰，告诉他我们的一切都是上帝创造的，上帝最终将严惩魔鬼。而星期五问，最终？我不懂？为什么现在不能老早就把魔鬼杀掉？这让主人公一时语塞。让我们再回到那个年代——黑奴贸易，工业革命，资本原始积累，所有人在意的都是在岛上毫无用处的金子，金币，也就是资本。这个时候有一个脱离了“正常社会”之外的人在绝境中进行了思考，思考宗教的意义，信仰的力量。每个时代大的变革都不可忽视思想家的作用，这是我认为其至今经久不衰的原因。卢梭评价这本书是一部合乎情理地解决问题和通过实践来学习的经典。当然其中的冒险精神，自由主义也是其重要的思想。但是对我来说，我是把这个“哈姆雷特”当做思想家的日常来理解的。
